About AileyCamp Miami 2017:

June 26, 2017 - August 4, 2017

A six-week summer day camp where middle school students are “turned on” to dance and come to respect the discipline of dance as a physical activity that requires athletic ability comparable to skills demanded by any sport.  Also, campers will increase their leadership skills and enjoy a variety of social activities.  AileyCamp is an innovative summer program designed to use dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, self-discipline, creative expression and critical thinking skills.  It does not serve as a training ground for professional dancers, but rather serves as a platform for self-growth. AileyCamp Miami serves Miami-Dade County Public Middle School students currently enrolled in 6th, 7th and 8th grade ages 11 to 14.

Background:

Set in the heart of downtown Miami and designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is one of the world’s leading performing arts organizations and venues. Spotlighting legends and serving as a launch pad for local artists to make their mark on the international stage, the Center presents nearly 500 events each year across its eight flexible, state-of-the-art performance spaces. The Center programs 12 signature series, including the largest jazz series in South Florida, the biggest flamenco festival on the East Coast, and a robust program of new theatrical works as well as free programming for the community and an arts education program that serves nearly 30,000 children each year. Since opening in 2006, the Arsht Center, a 501C3 non-profit organization, has emerged as a leader in presenting innovative programming that mirrors South Florida’s diversity as well as a catalyst for billions of dollars in new development in the downtown area. The Center includes the 2,200-seat Knight Concert Hall, the 2,400-seat Ziff Ballet Opera House, a 200-seat flexible space Carnival Studio Theater, and the 57,000-square- foot central Thomson Plaza for the Arts outdoor performance space.

Basic Function:

In Personal Development class, the PD instructor facilitates class/group discussions, using activities such as theater games & role playing, to provide a safe, comfortable environment where campers develop positive self-concepts, examine decision-making, exam the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse, learn proper nutrition and explore social issues such as peer pressure, bullying and issues of sexuality for pre-teens that arise among children in ages 11-14. All applicants should have experience working and conducting life lessons for youth through the creative arts.

Personal Development Responsibilities:

• Teach1-4 classes per day, Monday – Friday between the hours of 8:30am – 3:30pm
• Serve as a role model to campers by demonstrating high standards of personal conduct
• Assure the safety of campers at all times in the classroom
• Assist campers in the development of self-discipline and critical thinking skills through facilitated discussions, workshops and teacher lead activities.
• Organize and implement Personal Development seminars on drug awareness and abuse, nutrition, health, hygiene, human sexuality, career goals, conflict resolution, decision making and self-esteem building.
• Facilitate activities such as role playing, group discussion, peer counseling and mediation
• Provide AileyCamp Director with a schedule of proposed class content/lesson plans for five weeks of class instruction
• Participate in breakfast duty, lunch duty, free periods and general supervision of campers when not in classes or meetings
• Participate and supervise campers as directed on field trip days
• Participate in all rehearsal, preparation and day-of final performance activities as needed to support artistic staff
• Work in conjunction with the Creative Communication Instructor to facilitate visual installations and artwork for the Final Performance
• Direct a piece for the Final Performance based on the elements of the personal development class that are organically taken from the campers’ voices. (Ex. scenes, short monologues, public service announcement video)
• Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings (3:30 – 4:30pm) and individual meetings with AileyCamp Director
• Provide AileyCamp Director with written reports of individual students and groups as needed for documentation
• Dress in the AileyCamp staff uniform and in a neat and clean manner insuring clothing and/or costumes do not contain inappropriate references for children (alcohol, drugs, profanity, etc.)
• Attend a mandatory staff orientation on June 21, 22 and 23, 2017
• Voluntarily participate in the background checks required for employment including but not limited to federal and sex offender checks and finger printing
• Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Minimum of 3 years’ previous experience, teaching visual or performing arts and/or counseling middle school aged youth
• Prior experience in establishing creative environments and opportunities of creative expression for youth
• Previous experience in creating detailed curriculum that focuses on the personal development of youth
• Previous experience in creating a fun and innovative curriculum as it relates to health and nutrition
• Must be able to identify with and inspire youth from a variety of cultural backgrounds and learning environments
• Must have exceptional verbal and written skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate well to a diverse population, and work as part of a team with other creative staff members
• Demonstrate ability to take initiative, work under pressure and manage multiple tasks with completing deadlines in a self-directed, prioritized and calm manner.
• Flexibility to meet changing needs and priorities as they occur.
• Preferred- Bilingual in English, Spanish or a mixture of Creole and English
• Preferred- Fun and compassionate counselors, theatre artists, visual artists, drama therapists, art therapists, or music therapists
