Company Description:

MDC Live Arts fosters cultural and intellectual exchange by presenting outstanding performances and educational activities from around the globe that strengthen relationships between artists, students, and the community at large.

Miami Dade College (MDC) is proud to be the home of MDC Live Arts: Miami's most eclectic performing arts series. Created in 1990 as Cultura del Lobo, MDC Live Arts has a celebrated history of bringing extraordinary national and international performing artists to Miami. The annual series presents today's most exciting artists and designs meaningful engagement between these artists, the students of MDC, and the greater community. MDC Live Arts seeks artists from across the globe who push boundaries and honor traditions relevant to Miami's diverse community, and aims to offer audiences opportunities to discover new ideas, perspectives and forms of expression.

Through the years, we have presented nearly 200 companies from around the world and have conducted many successful artist residencies with artists such as: Urban Bush Women, Bill T. Jones, Ravi Shankar, Phillip Glass, Shen Wei, Emeline Michel, Ron Carter, Kronos Quartet, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Branford Marsalis, Esperanza Spalding, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Lila Downs, Paquito D'Rivera, and most recently, celebrated choreographer Kyle Abraham. We have been providing audiences in South Florida with outstanding performances for over 20 years and have earned a reputation of presenting the very highest quality work available.

We serve all of Miami-Dade County, concentrating upon, but not exclusive to, the student body of Miami Dade College, the nation's largest and most diverse college. The school ranks first in the nation in the number of Pell grants awarded, with 39 percent of its students living below the poverty line, yet its students continue to not only excel, but also to give back to the community in impressive numbers. Our placement within the College's larger framework has made it possible to reach an exceptionally diverse population. Annually, thousands of community members and students, who otherwise would not have exposure or access to the performances and artists, come into contact with and learn from a wide range of world class performers from jazz masters and spoken word poets to masters of sacred dance forms and cutting edge theater movements.

MDC Live Arts is a nationally recognized performing arts presenter that receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida, the Southern Arts Federation, the City of Miami Beach, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Foundation support has been gratefully awarded by the Ford Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, and the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Fund. We are proud members of the National Performance Network and the Association of Performing Arts Presenters.
